— A number of relatives and friends from Newton attended funeral services at the Bergtal church near Pawnee Rock on Monday afternoon for Mrs. Susie Siebert, 55, wife of Chester Siebert of Larned. Rev. Victor Sawatzky, the pastor, officiated. Mrs. Siebert died Saturday at Larned. She was a sister of Sister Lena Mae Smith of Bethel Deaconess Hospital. Mrs. Hans Regier of Whitewater and Max Smith of North Newton. A son, Robert Siebert , is attending Bethel College.

SUSIE SMITH SIEBERT

Susie Smith Siebert, daughter of Samuel P. and Mary Boese Smith, was born Nov. 8, 1898, and passed away Oct. 4, 1958, attaining the age of 59 years, 10 months and 26 days.

She was baptized upon her confession of faith by Rev. Peter H. Dirks, in August 1916, and was received as a member in the Bergthal Mennonite Church in which she remained active and faithful during her entire life. She enjoyed two years at the Bethel Academy at North Newton, and then spent several years in the home caring for her mother and later her father.

She was united in marriage to Chester Siebert on Nov. 8, 1923. To this union four children were born.

Mother was devoted to her family and gave them an abundance of loving care. She loved people and especially enjoyed serving them through the church and various community activities. In this capacity her responsibilities included active participation in the Mission Society, Sunday school and Bible school, as well as serving as a Grey Lady at the Larned State Hospital.

She always had a concern for the guidance of young people and a desire to comfort the aged. She maintained a helpful attitude to all. In her last illness she expressed gratitude for her family and church which had been the greatest blessings in her life.

She suffered much with cancer during the last two years. She kept her faith and sought the will of God. When needing comfort and faith to bear her burden she found resources to impart faith and comfort to others. she was persistent in thinking of others even in her darkest hours. She asked that we rejoice with her in death and have childlike faith.

Now missing her loving presence are her husband, Chester; her children, Elaine and husband, Earl Loganbill and their two children, of Kansas City, Frances and husband, Lloyd Rempel, and their three children, of Hillsboro, and Roger, who is attending Bethel College.

Her memory will also be cherished by eight brothers and sisters — she being the first of a family of nine to pass on to her reward — and many other friends and relatives. Another son, Donald, preceded her in death on April 11, 1954.

Her faith is expressed in the hymn, “Worthy Art Thou, Lord Divine,” which she loved so well and which comforted her and strengthened her.
