Long-Time Bluffton Professor Dies

Dr. Paul R. Shelly, professor of Bible and Christian Education at Bluffton College since 1943, died Sunday morning, June 14, at the Bluffton Community Hospital, it was learned here [Newton, Kansas] by his brother, Rev. Andrew R. Shelly.

Dr. Shelly underwent surgery for cancer in the chest area in January, necessitating the amputation of his left arm. He recovered sufficiently to return to his teaching duties.

Private services for family members were to be held at Bluffton on Wednesday forenoon, with burial in the Bluffton cemetery. A memorial service was arranged for 2 o'clock in the afternoon at the Bluffton First Mennonite Church.

Dr. Shelly was born at Pennsburg, Pa., the son of Rev. and Mrs. Elwood Shelly. He received degrees from Ursinus College, Hartford Theological Seminary and Columbia University. He joined the Bluffton faculty after serving as pastor of the First Congregational Church, Aberdeen, Wash.

For many years Dr. Shelly was a member of the Board of Education and Publication (now the Commission on Education) of the General Conference Mennonite Church. During much of his term he was chairman of the Curriculum Committee.
