Bishop James M. Shank died on July 7. Born Jan. 18, 1920, in Pond Bank, he was the son of Harvey E. and Anna (Martin) Shank. In 1942 he married Ruth Hess, who survives. He was ordained to the ministry in 1943 in Franklin County, Md. He and Ruth served under the Eastern Mennonite Board in Tanzania from 1946 to 1957. In 1958 James became pastor of East Chestnut Street Church. In 1966 he was ordained bishop, having oversight of the eight churches in the Lancaster District. He is also survived by a daughter, Lois Davidson; two sons, James M. Jr., and David; four sisters, Eunice Bollinger, Leah Horst, Miriam Nolt and Esther Leaman; one brother, Luke; five grandchildren; and his stepmother, Anna Bricker Shank. Funeral services were held at the East Chestnut Street Church, with interment at Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery.
