Funerals Held for Slain Civil Rights Workers
Two separate funerals held for two of the slain civil rights workers whose decomposed bodies were found near Philadelphia, Miss. after a 44-day search, attracted large crowds in New York last week.
The two were Andrew Goodman, 20, and Michael Schwerner, 24, both of New York City. The grief-stricken parents said they hoped their sons had “not died in vain.” The third victim, their Negro companion, was James Chaney, 21, of Meridian, Miss.
To the end, many Mississippi whites had contended that the disappearance of the three young men was a hoax. the FBI stated that the discovery of the bodies was the result of “a thorough, complete, methodical, painstaking operation. There was nothing haphazard or lucky about it.”
At Athens, Ga., the FBI arrested four Ku Klux Klan members accused in the slaying of Washington, D. C., Negro educator Lemuel A. Penn a few weeks ago.
