CHARTER MEMBER OF PRETTY PRAIRIE, KANSAS CHURCH DIED AT 80

Pretty Prairie, Kansas. — One of the early settlers in Reno county and a charter member of the First Mennonite church here, Jacob A. Schwartz, passed away suddenly at his home on Feb. 13 at the age of 80. Funeral services at the local church on Sunday afternoon were largely attended.

Mr. Schwartz came to the United States from South Russia in 1874, and the family settled first in South Dakota. They moved here in 1884. He was a member of the building committee when the large Mennonite church here was built. Six sons, three daughters, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive.

JACOB A. SCHWARTZ

Jacob A. Schwartz, son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Graber) Schwartz, was born in South Russia Feb. 28, 1868. The Lord took him home Feb. 13, 1948, at the age of 79 years, 11 months, and 13 days. He died at his home near Pretty Prairie, Kans. of a heart ailment which had been his affliction for about 15 years. Relatives thought his sudden death was due to over-exertion during the recent snow and cold spell.

In 1874, at the age of six years, he came with his parents to the United States of America. They first settled in South Dakota. There he was baptized on the confession of his faith in the Lord Jesus by Elder Chris Kaufman and received into the Salem-Zion church.

In 1884 he came with his parents to Kansas and they made their home in Reno county. Here he became and remained a charter member of the First Mennonite church of Pretty Prairie, Kansas. As one of the early settlers he experienced pioneer hard ships including work for daily wages.

He was an active member in the church. He gave of his help and advice willingly when called upon. He served as deacon, Sunday School teacher and otherwise. He was chairman of the building committee when the present church was built.

He was united in holy wedlock with Fanny Albrecht on Feb. 25, 1892. They were privileged to share the joys and sorrows of life for 55 years. The Lord blessed them with ten children. His wife preceded him in death on Oct 2, 1947; also one infant son and one grandchild.

He leaves to mourn his departure six sons and three daughters, five daughters-in-law and two sons-in-law. They are: Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schwartz, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph J. Schwartz, Mr. and Mrs. Peter J. Schwartz, Henry Schwartz, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Schwartz, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schwartz, Mr. and Mrs. Herman D. Graber, Miss Emma Schwartz and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin J. Goering, all of Pretty Prairie; there are 18 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, three brothers, two sisters, and a host of relatives and friends.
