Indiana Police Charge Four in Killing of Amish Baby in Buggy

Decatur, Ind.—Initial charges of battery were leveled Sept. 1 against four suspects in the death of eight-month-old Amish girl Adeline L. Schwartz, who was killed the night before in an attack on her parents' carriage. State police said the four—two of whom reside in Berne and two in Monroe—could be charged with murder when investigation into the case is completed.

The death came when rocks and pieces of clay were hurled at the carriage from a passing truck. The child, who was lying in the back seat of the buggy, was struck in the head by a piece of clay tile and killed.

Adams County Sheriff Thomas Coolman said he believes at least some of the four suspects were involved in other, recent attacks on horse-drawn carriages, since the description of their vehicle matches the description given by other victims.

Parents of the dead girl are Mr. and Mrs. Levi Schwartz of Monroe.
