text of obituary:

GERMAN POLITICAL LEADER DIED

Death last week removed one of the most powerful figures in the post-war German political scene. Kurt Schumacher, 56, leader of the Socialist Party of West Germany, died at his home in Bonn, Germany of a coronary thrombosis.

Dr. Schumacher, who battled physical handicaps and ill health most of his life and survived the terrors of the Dachau concentration camp, was the militant leader of the main opposition party in west Germany. He opposed Chancellor Adenauer's program, including German rearmament.

He had lost an arm in World War I, one leg was amputated in 1947, and his health was injured in the concentration camp experience.
