Pioneer Missionary in Chicago Dies

REV. G. P. SCHULTZ WAS LONG-TIME PASTOR OF BRIGHTON MENN. CHURCH

Chicago, Ill. — Funeral services were held at the Brighton Mennonite Church on Oct. 23 for Rev. George P. Schultz, pioneer Mennonite missionary in the city of Chicago and a well known evangelist and editor of church publications. Death came on Oct. 21 at the age of 77.

Rev. Schultz engaged in mission work in Chicago for more than 50 years. From 1908 to 1914 he was superintendent of the Happy Hour Mission, and in 1917 became pastor of the Brighton Mennonite Church where he served for many years.

He was the first editor of the “Good Tidings” paper, published by the Defenseless Mennonite Brethren Church, and from 1922-31 was editor of “Zions Tidings,” publication of the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church. He traveled widely in evangelistic work.

A native of Mountain Lake, Minn., Rev. Schulz attended Moody Bible Institute and held degrees from the Chicago Theological Northern Baptist seminaries, as well as an honorary D.D. degree from the American Bible College.
