JACOB H. SCHROEDER

Jacob H. Schroeder, son of Jacob and Margaret Hiebert Schroeder, was born Sept. 1, 1880, in McPherson county south of Canton, Kansas.

He received his public school training in the Good Hope school district. He was baptized upon confession of faith in his Redeemer Jesus Christ May 29, 1898, and became a member of the Alexanderwohl church, whose faithful member he remained until death.

On Sept. 12, 1902, he was united in holy marriage to Susie Janzen, with whom he shared a happy marriage for a little over 22 years, until she was taken in death Sept. 2, 1924. To this union were born nine children, of whom one died at the age of seven months.

The Lord granted him another life’s companion in Justina Regier. The marriage took place Nov. 25, 1925, in the Hoffnungsau church. To this union were born two children. They enjoyed a happy married life of many spiritual and material blessings for 28 years and three days.

The departed enjoyed quite good health all through life. Only in the last three years did his health begin to fail. He became seriously ill on Oct 1, and never fully recovered.

Bro. Schroeder was a faithful church member and church worker, having served as trustee, in its early years also as a Sunday school teacher, and also one of the faithful contributors to the church and all Christian causes, primarily missions and relief. He was instrumental in making it possible that Mrs. Margot Wiens and her children Manfred, Hartmut and Carmen from war-torn Europe could find a home and occupation here. He showed much [cupation here. He showed much] [sic phrase as printed]

Bro. Schroeder was also a faithful Bible student. He had read, through the Holy Bible six times by Dec. 1952 and had now finished the 7th reading to I Corinthians 12. Truly such Bible reading is rare. We truly believe that everlasting life is the portion of this faithful reader and hearer of God’s Word.

In 1950 the silver wedding anniversary was celebrated. This was an occasion greatly appreciated by the father and mother and the children. It proved to be a time of many happy reminiscences of God’s gracious leading and giving of many blessings.

Bro. Schroeder loved landscaping and did a great deal to help beautify the evergreen trees around his beloved church, his home, at the hospital and school. His labors will be greatly missed. The departed loved work, and did as much as he could, practically to the end of his life. He was a farmer and retired to a new home in Goessel on Sept. 16, 1952.

He became seriously ill on Nov 28 and was again taken to the Bethesda hospital at Goessel where the best medical and nurses care was given him, but he passed away early Monday morning at 4:00 a.m., reaching the age of 72 years, two months and 29 days And now he belongs to the immortals who rejoice in their redemption in the House of many mansions. He leaves to mourn his sudden departure his wife Justina of the home in Goessel and the following children: Sam J., wife and family of McPherson; Alice, Mrs. Roland Pankratz, husband and family Newton; Margaret, Mrs. Fred N. Riesen, husband and family, Wichita; Sarah, Mrs. Albert Wunderlich, husband and family, Peabody; Edward J., wife and family of Canton; Edna, Mrs. Pete Nickel husband and family of Moundridge; Esther, Mrs. Isaac Ratzlaff husband and family Hesston; Evelyn, Mrs. Richard Banman, husband and family of Hillsboro; Marlene, Mrs. Lloyd Schroeder, husband and family of Newton; Alden J. and wife of Colorado Springs, Colo.

He also leaves 28 grandchildren (one grandchild died in early infancy), three great-grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Henry of Bellingham Wash., Emil of Hillsboro, David of Elbing, Mrs. David Balzer of Newton, Mrs. John M. Janzen of Hesston, Mrs. Gustav Weiderstein of Canton. Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Revelation 2:10, “Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer; ... be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life.”

Rev. Philip A. Wedel, assisted at the church by Rev. H. T. Unruh, had charge of the funeral services at the Bergen funeral home and at the Alexanderwohl church, Dec. 1, 1953 at 2 p.m.
