FRIEDA SCHROEDER

Frieda (Jansson) Schroeder of Winnipeg passed away peacefully June 5. She was born Oct. 12, 1888. She had a carefree life on a farm in Orloff, U.S.S.R. On the next estate, Tiege, she often looked after her great-grandfather. About age 26 she gave her life to the Lord. About 1936 she was baptized by immersion; she loved to recall that day. In 1917 she married Johannes Schroeder of Schonsee, Kulm, a union blessed with 7 children. They moved from Marienberg to Dt. Eylan. Daughter Marie-Ann died at 23 in August, 1941 during a tonsillectomy. Husband Johannes died in 1942 during the bombing of Danzig. Son Heinrich-Werner died in the last years of the war in Elbing. In 1945 children Elfriede, Dorothea, Reinhold and Louise were sent back to the U.S.S.R., with all but Louise dying in a labour camp. Son Johannes-Gerhard escaped since he was serving in the marines. Frieda survived a year of German occupation, and was reunited with Johannes in West Germany in 1946 and with Louise in 1947. In September, 1952 she immigrated to Winnipeg. She is survived by son John of Waterloo, Ont.; daughter Louise of Winnipeg; 4 granddaughters and 5 great grandchildren. The funeral was June 8 in Portage Ave. MB Church, with Abe Neufeld and Gerhard Friesen ministering.

"Mennonite Brethren Herald" obituary: 1990 Sep14 p. 28 Correction: Frieda Schroeder (Aug. 10) was not born in the U.S.S.R. but near Danzig in what is now Poland. After her marriage she lived near Marienburg in Prussia. Her oldest daughter is Marie-Anne. The four children were sent to a labour camp in Prussia, not the U.S.S.R. Frieda survived a year of Russian occupation. She has 2 granddaughters.
