Steinbach, Manitoba. — Frank H. Schroeder, last survivor of the pioneer Mennonite immigrants who settled on the East Reserve in 1874, recently observed his 98th birthday at Resthaven Home where he has resided for the past year.

Mr. Schroeder was born in the village of Rosenthal in Bergthal Colony, South Russia, in 1872 and came to Canada with his parents in 1874. the Schroeder family, members of the Bergthaler Church, traveled to America with the 18 Kleine Gemeinde families who were the first settlers on eight townships reserved for them by the federal government in and around what is now Steinbach. However, the Schroeders stopped off in Ontario for a month, arriving here in late 1874.

Mr. Schroeder's family is comprised of two sons, George of Niverville and Frank of Winnipeg, and Frank Schroeders' two children and seven grandchildren.

Steinbach, Man. — Frank H. Schroeder, 98, believed to be one of only two surviving immigrants to come here from Russia in 1874, died at the Rest Haven Home here on Sept. 22.

Mr. Schroeder was born in the Bergthal Colony in Russia in 1872 and came here with an immigrant family late in 1874. The first settlers, members of the Kleinegemeinde group, had arrived earlier in the year.

It is believed that the only remaining 1874 immigrant to the Steinbach district is Henry D. Penner, who will reach his 100th birthday on Jan. 1, 1972. He is now a resident of the Salem Home at Winkler, Man.
