text of obituary:

VICTOR SCHROEDER

Our dear husband and father, Victor Schroeder, son of Peter H. and Amelia Nickel Schroeder, was born Jan. 7, 1899, in McPherson County, Kansas. In this community he spent his entire life.

He attended the Pleasant Valley grade school. After finishing the Goessel Preparatory School he spent one year at Bethel College. After this he attended McPherson College where he graduated from the academy.

On Dec. 26, 1917, he was baptized upon the confession of his faith by Rev. P. H. Unruh and was accepted as a member into the Alexanderwohl Church.

On July 30, 1922, he was united in marriage with Elma Klassen, and they shared life's joys and sorrows for nearly 36 years. This union was blessed with seven children.

In his early grade school days the community suffered a scarlet fever epidemic in which he also was a victim. The after-effect was rheumatic fever and leakage of the heart. Although he enjoyed comparatively good health, this ailment was more or less a handicap.

He found the real joy and assurance of his salvation in the year 1950 through the ministry of Rev. L. E. Lindstead of Wichita, Kansas, who visited him when a patient at the Wesley Hospital. At that time he suffered much agony due to a fall which collapsed his right lung. This added further discomfort to his life.

In April, 1954, he submitted to major surgery at the Kansas City Medical Center which offered only temporary relief. He suffered much pain, especially after having several attacks of pneumonia during the last two years. Each attack weakened his condition more. On May 5 of this year he again entered the Bethesda hospital with a virus infection from which he rallied enough to be home for several days. On May 15 he was readmitted for further treatment but in spite of all medical help he grew steadily worse and on May 22 at 8:15 p.m. he suddenly departed this life, released from all suffering to his heavenly home. He reached the age of 58 years, four months and 15 days.

Through his suffering he maintained a steadfast faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It was his desire to meet and see his daughter and family next summer when they are expected home on furlough. But when his sufferings were heavy he often expressed his desire to go home and be with his Redeemer.

He leaves to mourn his dear wife, Elma; seven children, three daughters and four sons, Jean, Mrs. Eddie Schmidt and husband of Newton, Kansas, LaVerna, Mrs. Herb Ediger and husband of Goba, Ethiopia, Eunice, Mrs. Wilbert Schmidt and husband of Goessel, Kansas, Goldwyn and wife Sylvia of Sacramento, Calif., DeLoy John, DeWane [sic Dewayne] James, and Ira Don of the home; nine grandchildren, three of which he never saw; his mother, Mrs. P. H. Schroeder of the Bethesda Home, Goessel; his step-mother-in-law, Mrs. J. J. Klassen of Goessel; two brothers, Ernest and wife of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Betho (Bethoven) [sic Bato (Beethoven)] Schroeder of Canton, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Ferd Graves and husband of Newton, Kansas; two brothers-in-law, Emil Klassen and wife of Moundridge, Kansas, and Adolf Klassen and wife of Sacramento, Calif.; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Albert Budde and husband of Newton, Kansas. He also leaves a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, Werner, and one grandson, Loren Dean Schmidt, also his father and mother-in-law.

Funeral services were held in the Alexanderwohl Church on May 25, 1958, in charge of Rev. P. A. Wedel assisted by Rev. Ed Stucky. Interment was made in the Alexanderwohl church cemetery.
