JOHN C. SCHROEDER

John C. Schroeder, the son of Peter K. and Anna (Nickel) Schroeder, was born Jan. 19. 1899, near Fairview, Okla. While he was a young child, his family moved to Kansas where he grew up and attended school. He returned to Fairview at the age of 18 to work and farm.

He was married to Agnes Janzen on Oct. 14, 1923 and they lived on a farm near Fairview. He gave his heart to Jesus during a revival meeting on Dec. 22, 1938, and was baptized in the Cimarron River three days later by Brother Griffith, the evangelist. Later he joined the North Mennonite Brethren Church.

In 1962 he and Agnes moved to town where he worked for the Martens Brothers moving houses until his health failed. Despite this, he remained cheerful and trusted the Lord. He loved to read the Bible and was a man who prayed much. His favorite hymn, "This World is Not My Home," expressed his steadfast hope, like that of Abraham who was persuaded of God's promises, and "embraced them, and confessed that (he was a) stranger and pilgrim on the earth." He entered the presence of his Lord on July 9, 1978.

Surviving are his widow; three brothers, Pete of Cleo Springs, August of Fairview and Harvey of Ozark, Mo.; and four sisters, Lula (Mr5s. Jake) Wichert of Hooker, Minnie (Mrs. Herb) Schwalk of Fairview, Mary (Mrs. Royce) Mires of Hooker and Agnes (Mrs. Ervin) Kliewer of Orienta. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
