HENRY SCHROEDER

Henry Schroeder, the son of Marguerite (Dueck) and David D. Schroeder, was born Sept. 24, 1887, on a farm near Buhler, Kan. and passed away and passed away at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Hutchinson, Kan. on Jan. 5 at 7:20 a. m. He lived to the age of 70 years, three months and 12 days. He has been a life-long resident of the Buhler community.

At the age of 25, upon his confession of faith in Christ as his personal Saviour, he was baptized by Elder Abraham Ratzlaff in the Hoffnungsau Church. He became a member of the Buhler Mennonite Church when it was organized. He remained a faithful member until his illness cause him to remain at home. He was a member of the board of trustees some years ago and was always willing to help whenever needed.

He was united in marriage with Marie Nachtigal on Jan. 27, 1915.

The first seven years of their married life was spent on a farm where the J. R. Dycks now live. Three children, Harry who died at birth, Martha and Albert came to bless this home. Then they moved to the home place two miles east and one and three-quarters miles south of Buhler where they lived for 35 happy years. Another son, Raymond, was born to them here.

He was active in farming until ten years ago when he had his first attack of illness. He then worked parttime helping the boys at harvest until two years ago when he became seriously ill. He submitted to surgery in May of 1956 and was in failing health since that time. The last three years he suffered considerable pain.

During the last night he sang “Wenn ich am Ufer des Jordans steh” and prayed for his wife, children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son Harry, his father, his father and mother, one sister, Mrs. Margaret Wall, and a brother Dave.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his beloved wife Marie; two sons, Albert and Raymond; one daughter Martha; two daughters-in-law, Althea (Smith) Schroeder, and Lois (Nickel) Schroeder; one son-in-law, Jacob R. Wiens; and seven grandchildren.
