— Miss Elizabeth Schroeder, who passed away at the Bethesda hospital at Goessel last Saturday evening, was laid to rest on Tuesday forenoon, with final services at the Alexanderwohl church. Miss Schroeder’s passing came after an extended illness. She had been a resident of the Goessel Home for the Aged before her admittance to the hospital. Two sisters, Miriam Schroeder of Newton and Mrs. J. M. Janzen of Hesston, are among the survivors.

ELIZABETH SCHROEDER

Elizabeth Schroeder, daughter of Jacob and Margaret Hiebert Schroeder, was born Sept. 26, 1886, at Hillsboro, Kansas. She passed to her eternal reward at 8:00 p.m. on Sept. 6, 1947, reaching the age of 60 years, 11 months and 11 days.

Elizabeth grew up on a farm together with her six brothers and three sisters. Both her father and mother preceded her in death. She was baptized upon confession of faith in her Redeemer by Elder Peter Balzer on June 11, 1905, and became a member of the Alexanderwohl church, whose faithful member she remained until her passing.

She received her education in the rural schools. She respected her parents highly and was trained to obedience and hard work. She cherished her parents’ admonitions. It was always of joy to her when she could life a load to someone in need or surprise somebody with a good deed. She was greatly concerned about her soul’s salvation and the welfare of her brothers and sisters.

Her father passed away in 1918, and in 1923 she and her mother left the farm and established their home in Hillsboro, where they lived together for about 22 years, sharing joys and sorrows.

Her life was not a rosy one. Tribulation and suffering was her lot. For a number of years she was afflicted with rheumatism, which left her unable to work. Later other complications set in and she became an invalid requiring much care. on April 16, 1945, she and her mother both entered the Home for the Aged at Goessel. On April 12, 1946, the mother passed away, leaving Elizabeth alone at the Home. She missed her mother intensely, becoming more homesick for heaven.

In June 1947 her troubles increased greatly and she suffered much from that time on. On Aug. 4 she was taken to the hospital for treatment, but was later taken back to the Home. On Sept. 1, 1947, she again entered the hospital, but her heart began to fail and she passed away the same day.

She found much comfort in the 23rd and 25th Psalms. Many Bible verses and songs gave her strength to endure and to overcome. Two of her favorite songs were “I Need Thee Every Hour” and “Wenn Ich Am Ufer des Yordan’s Steh.”

She leaves to mourn her sudden departure, in addition to many friends, the following brothers and sisters: Henry R. Schroeder and David J. Schroeder of Goessel, Mrs. David (Sara) Balzer and Miss Miriam Schroeder of Newton, Jacob H. Schroeder of Canton, Peter J. Schroeder and Abraham J. Schroeder of Hillsboro, Mrs. J. M. (Margaret) Janzen of Hesston.

Funeral services were held at the Alexanderwohl church on Sept. 9, 1947, in charge of the pastor, Rev. P. A. Wedel, assisted at the Home for the Aged and the cemetery by Rev. J. W. Vogt and Rev. C. C. Wedel.
