● Injuries suffered in an accident at the Kropf Lumber Co. in Hesston on Jan. 31 claimed the life of David P. Schroeder, 37, of the Goessel community. An employee of the company, he was loading board lumber alone when a stack of lumber fell on him, cutting off his breathing. Fellow employees found him a short time later, and mouth to mouth resuscitation was begun immediately. Treatment was continued by the Hesston ambulance which brought him to Bethel Deaconess Hospital. However he remained comatose and in critical condition until his death on Sunday. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Tabor Mennonite Church, with Rev. Albert M. Gaeddert in charge. Survivors include his widow, the former Joyce Unruh; four children, DeVona, Marcus, Rusten and Brent, all of the home; two brothers, Earl of Newton and Ivan of Wichita; and three sisters, Mrs. Arthur Boese of rural Canton, Mrs. Ralph Janzen of rural Hillsboro, and Mrs. Rudolf Newfield of Peabody.

DAVID PAUL SCHROEDER

David Paul Schroeder was born Nov 2, 1935 at Goessel, Kan. to David J. and Anna Krause Schroeder. He attended the Foster School near Elbing, Gordon School near Goessel, and Towanda Grade School, as well as Whitewater High School from which he graduated in 1954.

He was baptized and received into the Grace Hill Mennonite Church on June 1, 1952, by Pastor Herbert E. Miller. This membership was transferred to the Tabor Church in 1962 where he was a member until death.

Less than a year after high school he entered I-W service at the Larned State Hospital, living for the greater share of the time at the home of Dewey Schultzes. He had many happy memories of his work at Larned and the friends he made there during those two and one-half years.

After his return from service David was employed to Guerdon Industries at Newton for about two years, followed by seven years at Crossroads Co-op. About six years ago he began working at Kropf Lumber Co. Hesston.

On Oct. 3, 1959 he was married to Joyce Unruh at the Tabor Church. The Lord entrusted to our care four children: DeVona Dawn, now age 12, Marcus Craig, 11, Rusten Stoy, 9, and Brent Douglas 7.

Not quite two years ago we moved into our new home at Goessel. It was a special satisfaction to David to have our family settled on a place where we were the owners.

On Jan. 31 as he was working at the lumber yard some lumber fell on top of him, temporarily depriving him of oxygen. As soon as he was discovered, fellow employees administered mouth to mouth resuscitation and heart massage. The ambulance was called and he was taken to Bethel Hospital. He remained there four days in a state of unconsciousness. He went to his heavenly home on Sunday, Feb. 4, 1973, having reached the age of 37.

Those remaining to cherish the memory of his life are his wife, Joyce, and the four children; his brothers and sisters, Earl and wife Esther Schroeder of Newton, Ann and husband Art Boese of Canton, Lois and husband Ralph Jansen of Hillsboro, Jean and husband Rudy Newfield of Peabody, Ivan and wife Shirley Schroeder of Wichita; his parents-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Henry Unruh of Newton; and one brother-in-law, Stanley and wife Raedine Unruh of Denver. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1969 and his father in 1971. — Joyce Schroeder
