ABRAHAM J. SCHROEDER

Abraham J. Schroeder, son of Jacob and Margaretha Schroeder, was born January 2, 1898, in Menno township, Marion county, Kansas as the ninth child in the family. He received his elementary education in the district grade school and the Goessel preparatory school.

He was baptized upon the confession at his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ December 26, 1917 by his pastor, Rev. P. H. Unruh and accepted into the fellowship of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church. Later when living close to Hillsboro, he transfered [sic] his membership to the Mennonite church of Hillsboro.

His parents, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death. When his father passed away In December, 1918, he, at the age of 20 years, had to assume the major part of the responsibility connected with the parental farm.

On October 22, 1922, he united with Tena Penner in holy matrimony. Two sons were born to this union, Howard and Virgil. He also had one daughter-in-law. In October, 1947, the parents were privileged to celebrate the 25th wedding anniversary in the circle of close relatives. The duration of their union was 27 years, eight month and 17 days. He passed away on Sunday, July 9, 1950, at 10:30 p.m., reaching the age of 52 eyars [sic], six months and seven days.

Our loved one was an ambitious father, always concerned for the welfare of his family. He enjoyed many blessings, but it pleased the Lord to permit trials and misfortunes to come into his life. Still he always tried to keep up courage and overcome prevailing difficulties.

He enjoyed fairly good health until a few years ago when his digestive organs, ceased to function normally. He sought a doctor’s help, which gave him temporary relief. Last winter he began to fail and his condition got worse. A doctor at Axtell Christian hospital at Newton was consulted, who, after repeated diagnosis, advised an operation to which he reluctantly yielded. This operation took place last April 29. The doctor found his case hopeless and declared his ailment to be cancer of the liver and pancreas, but gave hope that, under treatments, he still might live a few years.

On his sick bed he often communed with the Lord, preparing himself for his departure if the Lord should so will. He suffered much but tried to bear It partiently [sic]. As the end of his life drew nearer, his desire to go home and be with the Lord waxed stronger and his thankfulness became more overwhelming. He often marveled over the wonderful grace of God towards him.

We are grieving, but not as those who have no hope. We rest fully assured that our dear husband and father Is now with the Lord.

He leaves to mourn his early departure, his family, four brothers and three sisters: Henry R. Schroeder of Ferndale, Wash.: Jacob H. of Canton, Kans.; Emil of Hillsboro, Kans.: David J. of Towanda, Kans.; Sara, Mrs. David Balzer, of Newton: Margaret, Mrs. J. M. Janzen of Hesston, and Mariam of Canton. He also leaves his aged mother-in-law, Mrs. H. H. Penner of Hillsboro, 2 brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law, and a host of friends. — The Bereaved Family.
