MELVIN SCHROCK

Melvin Schrock, 88, of Halsey, Ore., died as a passenger in a traffic accident May 21, 1997. He was born near Shickley, Neb., Feb. 16, 1909, to Joseph and Bella (Yordy) Schrock.

When he was 8 months old, his family moved to Oregon, locating near Albany. Most of his life he lived in the Albany and Tangent areas. In his youth he accepted Christ as Savior and Lord and by baptism became a member of Fairview Mennonite Church near Albany. In 1950 he became a charter member of Tangent Mennonite Church.

On Sept. 3, 1933, he married Anna Roth, who survived the accident 10 days. On Aug. 26, 1934, he was ordained to the ministry in which he actively served for more than 55 years.

Melvin and Anna’s home was open to all. He was faithful in visiting the widows, sick and elderly. He took a keen interest in church, family, and community.

Ministry to the church took first place in Melvin’s life. He farmed for many years, after which he drove a school bus and was a warehouse worker. Even when Melvin was no longer able to work outside the home, he helped support himself and his wife by tagging bags for Smith Seed Services.

He is survived by three sons, Paul and wife June of Scottdale, Pa., Jason and wife Ruth of Halsey, Ore., and John of Halsey; five daughters, Esta and husband Roy Mast of Pedernales, Mexico, Eunice and husband James Mast of Amelia, Va., Melva Anne and husband Marvin Zook of Red Lake, Ont., Rhoda and husband Dean Mast of Rutherfordton, N.C., and Julia and husband Mark Torkelson of Keymar, Md.; 57 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; and a brother, LeRoy of Albany. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five brothers and three sisters.
