Marion, S. D. Pioneer Dies at Freeman

Freeman, S. D. — Peter J. Schrag, one of the pioneer residents of the Freeman-Marion vicinity, died March 18 at the Freeman Community Hospital at the age of 90.

On March 14 he sustained a fractured pelvis in a fall at the Salem home for Aged here, where he and his wife had resided since 1962. On March 17 he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, which caused his death.

A native of Gayville, S. D., he came to the Marion community at the age of two when his parents settled on a homestead there. In 1899 he was married to Mary Kaufman, and they settled on a farm southwest of Marion where they continued to reside for half a century, retiring in 1950. Four sons and four daughters and their families are among the survivors.

He was a member of the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church near Freeman, where the funeral was conducted Sunday, March 20.
