Funeral Service for Pretty Prairie Couple, Daughter Largely Attended

Pretty Prairie, Kan. — Approximately 1,000 friends, relatives and associates filled the First Mennonite Church near here Monday afternoon for the funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schrag and daughter Janice, 21, who lost their lives in a highway accident last Friday evening while en route to Hutchinson.

Rev. Ben Rahn, the pastor, conducted the service. Attending were a number of students and faculty members from Bethel College, where Janice was a senior music student. The Bethel College Choir sang two selections. Rev. Joseph Bayles, chaplain of the Kansas State Reformatory in Hutchinson where Mr. Schrag had been active in visitation work, read a statement of appreciation from a group of inmates.

The tragic accident at Crupper's Corner five miles south of Hutchinson also resulted in instant death for Irvin E. Sidles, 49, of Wichita, driver of the other car involved. It is believed the east bound car driven by Sidles ran the stop sign and crashed into the north bound Schrag auto. Mrs. Schrag was dead on arrival at the hospital, and her husband and daughter died soon after admittance to the hospital.

Mr. Schrag, 52, and his wife, the former Dorothy Goering, 48, were both lifelong residents of this community. He was a prominent Reno County dairyman and board member of the Kansas Guernsey Assn. Several years ago the couple turned their dairy farm operation over to their son, Galen, and moved to Pretty Prairie. Since then they had been active in various kinds of volunteer church service, including a term as 1-W counselors in Denver. Their daughter was an accomplished pianist and planned to teach public school music after graduation.

In addition to the son and brother and the family, survivors include a numberof brothers and sisters of the couple. The accident was part of a tragic week end in Kansas which left 19 persons dead in traffic accidents.
