MARTHA (PREHEIM) SCHRAG

Martha Preheim Schrag, daughter of Peter J. and Anna (Muller) Preheim, was born Sept. 18, in Childstown Township, Turner County near Freeman, S. D.

At the age of three she moved with her parents to a farm in Norway Township eight miles south of Marion, S. D. where she grew up. In addition to a fundamental Christian training in the home, she attended rural school and Freeman Academy.

On Oct. 18, 1914 she was baptized by Rev. Christian Hege upon her confession of faith in Christ as her Saviour, and was received into the fellowship of the Salem Mennonite Church, of which she was a member at the time of her death. She loved her Lord and the church. She was regular in attending the services, taking an interest and active part in various activities.

She was united in marriage with Rudolph Schrag on May 2, 1922 by Rev. E. J. Neuenschwander. They established their home on a farm four miles south of Freeman, where together they shared life's blessings and joys for almost 41 years. To this union one daughter, Lucille, was born.

The family will remember Martha as a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. By neighbors and friends she will be remembered as one who willingly and freely shared her blessings with others.

Martha enjoyed good health through the years, until the latter part of October of this year when a bronchial condition became evident. In spite of medical care, clinical treatments and all that loving hands could do, her condition became progressively more serious, causing her sudden death on Friday evening, Dec. 21, 1962 at the Freeman Community Hospital, having reached the age of 64 years, three months and three days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters who died in infancy, and one brother-in-law.

Surviving are her husband, Rudolph; her daughter Lucille, her son-in-law Rolland Waltner and three grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Ries, Rose (Mrs. Jonathan) Ries, Laura (Mrs. Peter H.) Graber; five brothers, Adolph, Edward Jacob, Chris and Clinton; five sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 24, 1962 at the Walter Funeral Chapel at 1:15 p.m. and the Salem Mennonite Church at 2:00 p.m. Rev. J. Herbert Fretz spoke on the text, II Timothy 4:7. Interment was made in the Salem Mennonite Cemetery.
