Small Child Loses Life When Run Over By Heavy Truck.
McPherson, Kans., Sept. 16. — The eleven months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reinhold J. Schrag, Martha Dee, was killed instantly at 6:45 o'clock Saturday evening at the Schrag farm home four miles west of McPherson. The child was killed when a truck was accidentally backed over the baby.
The baby was playing in the yard when the accident occurred. Martha Dee was playing near the truck and was being watched by an older brother. The brother is said to have gone into the house for a short time and in the meanwhile the baby crawled around to the rear of the truck.
Melvin Peterson, who has been working at the Schrag farm for some time, got into the truck. The baby was behind the right rear wheel and Peterson was unable to see it when he started backing.
There were several other men in the yard near the scene of the accident but none of them saw the child in time to warn Peterson. The truck was backed over the entire body of the baby and doctors said the girl probably died instantly.
Funeral services for the baby are being held this afternoon at the Hopefield Mennonite church. Burial will be made in the Hopefield cemetery.
The death of the Schrag infant brought the total of violent deaths in McPherson county so far this year to 26. The total number of violent and unusual deaths in the county last year was 21. McPherson Republican.
