PAUL F. SCHOWALTER

Paul F. Schowalter was born near Halstead, Kan. on Aug. 12, 1885, and died at his ranch home at Cucamonga, Calif. Nov. 23, 1957, at the age of 72 years.

In 1904 he with his parents came to Upland, Calif. where for a number of years he was associated with his father in citrus growing.

On Dec. 11, 1913, he was married to Miss Irene Eyman, formerly of Moundridge, Kan. but now also of Upland. After the death of his parents hey took up residence in the parental Schowalter home in Foothill, where they resided for many years until thy built a house in their citrus grove near Cucamonga.

In the passing of Mr. Schowalter our church and community has lost an outstanding leader. In years past he had survived two major surgeries for stomach ulcers, but a permanent heart condition had necessitated withdrawal from many activities. He still was president Cucamonga Mesa Growers, but his 15 years as Boy Scout leader belonged to pleasant memories.

In the church he had declined re-election as church president, a position he had held for many years, but he offered his assistance as vice-president to help a younger leader with his counsel and advice. The shedding of his responsibilities did not mean that he had lost interest in his church. He was loyal to the end, helping as strength permitted.

Being aware of his serious heart condition he gave evidence that he was ready to go and was listening for his Master's call. The end came suddenly while his wife was away for a short while, as he was enjoying a television program.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Irene Schowalter; a daughter, Mrs. John Biel and family of Marvista; a son Donovan and family of Upland, besides many relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held in the First Mennonite Church of Upland with his pastor, Paul Goering, officiating. The sanctuary was filled to capacity with sorrowing friends. The profusion of floral offerings spoke of the high esteem in which he was held. Interment was in the Bellvue cemetery.
