One Killed, Four Hurt When Car of Minnesota Family Hits Truck

Mt. Lake, Minn. — Relatives from Mt. Lake attended funeral services at Hutchinson, Minn. on Dec. 26 for Mrs. Sam Scholl, 32, the former Elfrieda Bartel of Fairview, Okla., who died in a highway crash en route to Fairview to visit her family over Christmas.

Also attending the services were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. V. Bartel, and sisters and brothers who made the trip from Fairview to Hutchinson in two chartered airplanes.

It was learned here that Mr. Scholl, 35, and his son Ricky, 10, both critically injured in the crash, were showing improvement in a Lincoln, Neb. hospital. Another son, Scott, 6, suffered a broken leg, and eight-year-old Stanton escaped with cuts and bruises.

The family was traveling on a snow-covered highway near York, Neb. when their car crashed into the rear of a parked semi-trailer truck. The rear of the truck had been plastered with blowing snow, making it difficult to see.

Mr. Scholl, a native of Mt. Lake and former teacher here, is head of the psychology department in the Hutchinson High School.

MRS. ELFRIEDA SCHOLL

On Dec. 21, 1968 it pleased the Lord to allow our loved one, Mrs. Elfrieda Scholl, to enter the presence of the Lord. The family was on the way from their home in Hutchinson, Minn. to be with Mrs. Scholl's family and relatives in Fairview, Okla. for Christmas. They were traveling on the interstate between Lincoln and York, Neb. when their car struck a stalled semi-trailer truck. Humanly speaking this is a tragedy too hard to bear, but in the knowledge that no accident transpires in the life of God's children without His watchcare, we accept the experience as God's providence and even now rejoice that she, who knew Christ personally, is in the presence of our Lord.

Elfrieda Ruth Bartel was born April 5, 1936 near Isabella, Okla. to Peter B. and Bienna Bartel, and went to be with her Lord on Dec. 21, 1968 at the age of 32 years eight months and 16 days. She went to grade school and Progressive High School at Fairview and Corn Bible Academy and was a graduate of Grace Bible Institute as a music major. It was while a student at Grace that she met her future husband.

As a young girl she recognized her need and accepted Christ Jesus as Saviour, and was baptized on Sept. 28, 1949, and joined the Mennonite Brethren church. She was a faithful member of the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church of Hutchinson, Minn.

She was married on June 21, 1957 to Samuel Scholl. The Lord blessed this union with three sons. The family made their home at Minneapolis, Mountain Lake, Litchfield, and Hutchinson, Minn.

Mrs. Scholl was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Ray Bartel in 1933. She leaves to mourn her husband, Sam, and three sons, Richard, Stanton, and Scott; her parents of Fairview; her grandmother, Mrs. Lizzie Kliewer of Fairview; five brothers, Walter, Willard, and Carl Bartel, all of Fairview, Leroy Bartel of Merced, Calif., Erwin Bartel of Fresno, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Eugene (Erna) Saliaska of Balko, Okla., Mrs. Werner (Elsie Ann) Kroeker of Fresno, Calif., Mrs. Roy (Elvina) Short of Campbell, Calif., and Mrs. Wayne (Edna) Decker of Hesston, Kan.; 23 nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Music played an important role in her life. She learned to play the piano at an early age, sang with trios and choirs of Corn Bible Academy and Grace Bible Institute, gave music lessons, directed choirs and worked with youth groups.

The Lord's work was uppermost in her heat and life. She and Sam often went out as a gospel team while attending Grace; she would play the piano and sing and he would bring the message.

Our mourning is colored with gladness in the happy faith that we shall meet again in the presence of Christ who said, "In my Father's house there are many mansions." — The Family.
