— Rev. N. J. Schmucker, 72, a former minister of the Evangelical Mennonite church at Berne, Ind. died early Tuesday morning at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson. Rev. and Mrs. Schmucker have lived in Hutchinson since his retirement in 1951. Funeral services are to be held Thursday at the Evangelical Mennonite church near Sterling, with Ministers Arthur Enns, E. M. Rock and Vernon Harms officiating. Surviving of the immediate family are Mrs. Schmucker, a son, Loftin, Wichita, and a foster daughter, Mrs. Lois Bearman of Phoenix, Ariz.

REV. NOAH J. SCHMUCKER

Rev. Noah J. Schmucker, our beloved father and husband, was born to Daniel and Katherine Schmucker on Feb. 28, 1884, in Reno County, Kansas. On March 29, 1907, he accepted Christ as his Saviour and upon confession of faith was baptized and received into the fellowship of the Sterling Evangelical Mennonite Church where he remained a faithful member until his death.

On Nov. 27, 1907, he united in holy wedlock to Bertha Schlager with whom he shared life's joys and sorrows for 48 years. to this unin was born one son, Loftin.

As a young man he felt called of the Lord to enter into the ministry which he began in the year 1923. After a few years he was ordained into the ministry and served as associate pastor for 11 years in his home church. On Feb. 26, 1935, a call came from the Evangelical Mennonite Church of Berne, Ind. to be their pastor. This he felt was an opportunity to serve His Master and he accepted the call. For 16 years his ministry was used of God to lead many souls to Christ and comfort and encourage the hearts of many. For a few years he served as conference president, and for many years served on the Congo Inland Mission Board. On June 25, 1944, he was ordained as an Elder in the conference.

Father had a deep concern and passion for the souls of men, and loved to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ. His loyalty to God and to his family will never be forgotten.

On July 10 he suffered a heart attack at his home and was admitted to Grace Hospital. On July 17, at 12:15 a. m. the Lord took him home to his eternal reward where he is peacefully resting in the Lord. He reached the age of 72 years, four months and 19 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Bertha of the home, one son, Loftin of Wichita, and one daughter-in-law, Violet,; one foster daughter, Mrs. Lois Bearman, Phoenix, Ariz.; three foster grandchildren, Betty Jean Mann, Shattack [sic Shattuck], Okla., Leonard and Allen Smiley, of Wichita; one brother, Sam, of Sterling; four sisters, Elizabeth, Lavine, Mrs. Leah Betts, and Carrie, all of Hutchinson. Three brothers, Henry, Joel Jacob, and seven sisters, Sarah, Martha, Susan, Rose, Kathie, Mary, and Phoebe, all preceded him in death.

We keenly feel the loss of our father whose prayers and loving devotion we shall greatly miss, but we rejoice that he has gone to be with Jesus whom he so dearly loved.

The funeral was held July 19 at 10:00 a. m. in the Sterling Evangelical Mennonite Church. Rev. Arthur Enns officiated, assisted by Rev. Vernon Harms, Rev. Reuben Short, Rev. E. M. Rocke and Rev. H. E. Bertsche. Burial was made in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson.
