Amish Mother Dies In Crossing Crash
Goshen, Ind. — A horse pulling an Amish carriage became frightened at a railroad crossing near Nappanee on Sunday, Feb. 18, and ran into the side of a passing Baltimore and Ohio freight train, causing the death of Mrs. Katie Mae Schmucker, 29, mother of four daughters.
The Marvin E. Schmucker family were returning from church services and had just turned into their lane from US-6 when tragedy struck. Mrs. Schmucker was dead on arrival at Elkhart hospital.
