Mrs. Elizabeth R. Schmitt

Mrs. Elizabeth R. Schmitt, daughter of Johann and Maria Rupp, was born in Maxweiler, Bavaria, Germany, December 19, 1851, and died in Moundridge, Kansas, September 12, 1927. In the summer of 1855 she came with her parents to America, locating near Franklin, Lee Co., Iowa. Here she grew up to young womanhood.

On September 17, 1865, she was baptized upon the confession of her faith by Rev. Christian Schowalter and joined the Zion Mennoite [sic] Church near Franklin, Iowa. In February 1868 she with her parents moved close to Dayton, Washington County, Iowa, there joining the Salem Mennonite Church, transferring her membership to the West Zion Mennonite Church in 1888, of which she remained an active and faithful member until the day of her death.

On April 28, 1878 she was united in marriage to Daniel E. Schmitt of Keota, Iowa. They located on their farm 1¾ miles east of Moundridge. To this union five children were born, all of whom are living. Her husband preceded her in death on April 12, 1915.

The deceased was gradually recovering from severe injury of a fractured hip, which occurred several years ago. Through faith and prayer she patiently endured her pain until she enjoyed fairly good health.

On the particular day of her death she felt unusually well and worked in which she found pleasure, when she was taken with a severe headache, but afterward rested peacefully for several hours. Suddenly at the hour of eleven the Angel of Death called her to the home above where she desired to be.

The departed was a member of one of the oldest pioneer families of the Moundridge Community. She attained the age of 75 years, 8 months, and 23 days.

She leaves to mourn her departure 3 sons and 2 daughters, Jacob J. of Santa Monica, Calif., David H. of Moundridge, Mrs. Mary E. Haury, of Woodlake, Calif., Dr. Edwin C. of Monrovia, Cal., and Mrs. Esther K. Harmon, of Moundridge, also one brother Jacob Rupp of Moundridge and one sister, Mrs. Katherine Dester of Wichita, twelve grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
