• Mrs. Mary Schmidt, 83, widow of J. U. Schmidt, died Jan. 17 at Bethel Hospital here. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Alexanderwohl Church, with Rev. Aaron Epp in charge. A resident of the Goessel community most of her life, Mrs. Schmidt lived in Newton from 1953 to 1968, when she entered the Bethesda Home at Goessel. Surviving are sons Walter J. of Goessel, Adolf L. and Rudolph H. of Route 2, Newton, Bernhard D. of Newton, and Carl R. of Englewood, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. John B. Flaming of Hillsboro and Mrs. Orlando Voth of Route 2, Newton; a sister, Lizzie Hiebert of Goessel; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mary G. Schmidt of the Bethesda Home in Goessel, Kan. was born March 23, 1886 in Marion County to Jacob P. and Aganetha Goertz Hiebert.

She attended the Sand Creek elementary school. She was baptized upon her confession of faith that Jesus Christ was her Saviour by Elder Peter Balzer on May 22, 1904, and received into the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.

On June 6, 1907 she was married to Jacob U. Schmidt. Rev. C. C. Wedel officiated. To this union were born eight children.

For the first six years the family lived on a farm east of Hillsboro and then moved to the Hochfeld community in 1913. Mr. Schmidt died Sept. 9, 1947. In 1953 Mrs. Schmidt and son Bernhard moved to Newton.

Mrs. Schmidt was a good mother and provider. Her sense of judgment and humor was fair and encouraging. She loved music and helped along in the life of the church, and furnished flowers for the sanctuary and special occasions for many years.

During the last several years her health weakened. She became a resident of the Bethesda Home on May 18, 1968. She became ill the last week of her life and was taken to the Bethel Hospital in Newton on Jan. 17, 1970, where she died that evening, having reached the age of 83 years.

Those who remain to cherish the memory of the life are her children, Walter of Goessel, Verna and husband John B. Flaming of Hillsboro, Adolf L. and wife Susie of Goessel, Bernhard of Newton, Carl and wife Frances of Englewood, Colo., Frieda and husband Orlando Voth of Rt. 2, Newton, Rudolf and wife Luella of Rt. 2, Newton; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lizzie Hiebert, Goessel; one brother-in-law, P.U. Schmidt, Goessel; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Henry G. Hiebert, Hillsboro, and Mrs. Ben Hiebert, Walton; and many other relatives and friends. Her husband, Jacob U., one daughter, Ruth and two grandchildren preceded her in death.

Funeral services were conducted at the Alexanderwohl Church, Goessel, on Jan. 22 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Aaron J. Epp officiated. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
