Mrs. Lydia Schmidt was born in McPherson county, Kansas on July 1, 1899, and passed away at the Halstead hospital on June 16, 1954 at the age of 54 years, eleven months and 16 days. She came to the Halstead Community with her parents when she was one year old and had lived here ever since.

April 7, 1926, she was united in marriage with Jacob Schmidt, who died on May 13, 1948. To this union six children were born of whom five passed away in infancy.

In 1930, she remembered her Creator by yielding her heart and life to the Lord, and on April 20 she was baptized upon confession of her faith. She became a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, remaining a faithful member to the end.

Her life was filled with much sickness which caused her often to draw near to God, her only help. She was deeply concerned for the welfare of her only daughter from whom it was so hard to part. Knowing that the end was drawing near, she committed her into the hands of a loving God, who does all things well.

Surviving her is her daughter, Juanita, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Minnie Koehn of Burrton, Enos H. Koehn of LaMar, Colo., Zike Koehn of Halstead, Mrs. Lena Luginbill of Burrton, Mrs. Elizabeth Koehn of Halstead, Peter Koehn of Aurora, Neb. and Eli Koehn of McPherson, and many relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held in the Grace Mennonite Church on Sunday afternoon, June 20 at two o’clock with the pastors of the church officiating. A brief service in the house preceded the church service, with Rev. Paul Becker in charge. Participating in the services at the church were: Rev. Carl Dirks, Rev. Paul Becker, Rev. Kenneth Smith and Rev. Arnold Wiggers.

The church choir sang “Looking This Way” and “Heaven” in the home. In the church they sang: “Rock of Ages,” “Does Jesus Care,” “No Disappointment in Heaven” and “Rest For The Weary.” During the Committal services they sang “The Last Farewell.”

She was laid to rest by the side of her late husband in the Halstead cemetery. Casket bearers were: Obed Johnson, Irvin Johnson, Pete Koehn, Jesse Koehn, Elmer Unruh and Mose Unruh. The directors of the Kaufman funeral home were in charge.

HALSTEAD RESIDENT CALLED BY DEATH

Halstead, Kans. — Funeral services were held at the Grace Mennonite church near here Sunday afternoon, June 20, for Mrs. Lydia Schmidt, 53, who died June 16 at the Halstead hospital after a brief illness. She lived in this community most of her life.

Surviving are one daughter Juanita, at home, three sisters and four brothers. Her husband, Jacob Schmidt, died in 1948.

MRS. LYDIA SCHMIDT
