KATHARINA SCHMIDT
Katharina Schmidt died July 21. She was born in Aliesowa, Russia Apr. 23, 1914 to Peter and Susanna Krieger. Bible reading, prayer, and singing were an important part of the family's life. She attended Sunday school as long as communist authorities permitted. At 9, she accepted Christ. Katharina worked on a collective farm for 10 years where labour was hard, food often inadequate, hours long. She remained true to her faith, even though many denied it. She married Gerhard Schmidt in 1040. He was taken away by authorities only a year later and died the following May. In 1947, Katharina was baptized and became a member of the MB Church in Bavaria. Katharina and her daughter lived in Germany and Paraguay, then settled in Abbotsford, B.C. in 1952. Katharina worked in the berry fields, and enjoyed her garden, knitting, and the Maranatha ladies' fellowship. Predeceased by Gerhard; 4 brothers; 3 sisters; she is mourned by daughter Katie; sisters Agate, Eliesabeth, Sara , and Mariechen; brother Johann; nephews and nieces. The memorial service was July 27 at Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.
