Ernst Schmidt died Jan. 21. He is survived by his wife, Ella; children, Darlene Thiessen, Laura Flaming, Melvin, DeVera Wenger, and DuMont; 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Ernst and Ella were married more than 65 years.

Ernst J. Schmidt began his life's journey in the parental farm home of P. U. Schmidt and Anna Unruh Schmidt on August 30, 1904. The rest of the family consisted of two brothers and two sisters.

Ernst was baptized and joined the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church in June, 1924. He married his childhood sweetheart Ella Klassen on August 27, 1927. They were blessed with 65 years of togetherness. To this union were born five children: Darlene, Laura, Melvin, DeVera and DuMont. The family now includes sixteen grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. One brother, Richard remains.

Ernst and Ella lived on a farm near Canton. Ernst loved the farm and worked hard to tend the land and cattle. Difficult times and occasional health problems plagued the early years but he always seemed to recuperate and get back to the work at hand.

During his career as a farmer, Ernst was an active member of the community. He and his neighbors worked hard together on harvest crews and developed close relationahips. Ernst served on the Spring Valley school board and was active in various church committees. Although it was difficult to leave the farm, Ernst and Ella moved to Hesston in 1961 and spent twenty enjoyable years in a home they built on the west edge of town.

For the past twelve years, Ernst and Ella shared an apartment at Schowalter Villa, Hesston and membership at the Hesston Mennonite Church.

Ernst's health failed in November, 1992. With admission to the Schowalter care facility, life took on a different meaning for them. The day after he was admitted to the health care facility, the family Christmas gathering took place. It was difficult for him to enjoy this family reunion and for the family to see him suffering more health problems.

His death came graciously on January 21, 1993.

Ernst Schmidt died Jan. 21. He is survived by his wife, Ella; children, Darlene Thiessen, Laura Flaming, Melvin, DeVera Wenger, and DuMont; 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Ernst and Ella were married more than 65 years.
