— Mrs. Anna Schmidt, 98, widow of Peter Schmidt, died Jan. 14 at the Bethel Home for Aged. Funeral services were held Tuesday forenoon at the First Mennonite Church, with Rev. Robert Suderman in charge. Mrs. Schmidt was born in Russia on Nov. 1, 1872. She married Mr. Schmidt at Hillsboro in 1890, and he died in 1939. She had lived in Newton for the past 18 years. Surviving are three sons, Rev. Rudolph Schmidt of Buhler, Rev. August Schmidt and Ted Schmidt, both of Newton; five daughters, Mrs. Sara Ensz of Reedley, Calif., Deaconess Lola Schmidt and Mrs. Mary Martens of Newton, Mrs. Anna Thiessen of Buhler, and Mrs. Justine Bogema of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Fast of Newton; 22 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Anna Schmidt was born Nov. 1, 1872, in Alexanderthal, South Russia, and died Jan. 16, 1971, at the Bethel Home for Aged, Newton, Kan.

Her parents were Heinrich B. and Helena Friesen. In 1879, she emigrated with her parents to this country, and they settled in the Hillsboro, Kan. community. here she received her elementary education. Because of the difficult circumstances of her parents she helped to supplement living expenses while she was quite young.

She was baptized on Sept. 15, 1889, and received as a member into the Hillsboro Mennonite Church. On Oct. 112, 1890, she was married to Peter P. Schmidt of Goessel, Kan., who preceded her in death in 1939.

Her sunny disposition was carried all through her life, which endeared her to the family, relatives, friends, and also the workers and residents of the Home. She loved to sing, and some of her favorite songs were "So Nimm Denn Meine Haende,' and "Ich Bete An Die Macht Der Liebe." She loved to read the Bible, and Isaiah 54:10 and Psalm 23 were among her favorite verses. Her family devotions with loving instructions from the Word of God will always be remembered.

Those preceding her in death were her husband, Peter; a son, Alvin; a daughter, Mrs. Esther Rempel, and two grandchildren. Those who survive and cherish her memory are her children; Sara and husband John Ensz of Reedley, Calif., Rudolph and wife Katie of Buhler, Kan., Mrs. Mary Schmidt of Buhler, Kan., August and wife Esther, Ted and wife Marie, and Sister Lois, all of Newton, Anna and husband Abe Thiessen of Buhler, Kan., Mrs. Mary Martens of Newton, Justine and husband Bob Bogema of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a son-in-law, Waldo Rempel of Newton; 22 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Aunt Mary Fast of Newton.

Funeral services were conducted Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. at the First Mennonite Church of Newton with Rev. Robert Suderman, pastor, officiating. Interment was made in the Buhler Cemetery. — The Family.
