text of obituary:
MRS. PETER B. SCHMIDT
Susie Goertz Schmidt began her life's journey on Sept. 1, 1895, being one of seven children born into the Heinrich P. and Susanna Isaac Goertz family. She attended the Springfield Grade School and also the Goessel Preparatory School.
She received Jesus Christ as her Savior, was baptized upon her confession of faith on May 31, 1914 by Heinrich Banman and became a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.
On Dec. 14, 1917 mother was joined in her journey of life by Peter B. Schmidt. Living on a farm near Canton, they were able to share 45 years of life together. To this marriage were born five sons, Peter Jr. of Lehigh, Milferd of Canton, John Henry of Newton, Harold, who died in youth, Elmer, who died in infancy, and two daughters, Edna, Mrs. Arthur Enz of Newton and Emma, Mrs. Chester Regier of Hutchinson. There are 19 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She also leaves two brothers, Henry I. of Goessel and Peter I. of Lehigh, and many other relatives and friends.
Shortly after father left this life on June 7, 1963, mother moved to Goessel where she enjoyed life to the fullest. Mother loved God who made her, and offered endless hours to Him as a Sunday school teacher, and as a relief, mission, and church library worker. She was committed to voluntary service at home and in her church which she loved very much. She was a continual inspiration to her children, grandchildren and friends. Her sewing machine and her hands have been silenced, but her love lives on in the lives of everyone who knew her.
Realizing that her health was failing, she stayed with her daughter in Newton from the first of the year until March 11, when she entered Bethel Deaconess Hospital. Mother completed her journey in life early in the morning of May 11, 1971, by entering into a peaceful sleep, only to be awakened by her Lord and Master who called her to begin her journey in a life that will never end.
Funeral services were held at the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church on May 13, with Rev. Ronald Krehbiel officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery.
