— Simon F. Schmidt, 64, lifelong resident of the Goessel vicinity, died suddenly Monday morning at the farm home on Route 2, Newton. He had been in ill health for several months. Funeral services were announced for Thursday afternoon at the Alexanderwohl church. Rev. P. A. Wedel in charge. Surviving are the widow, who was Margaret Unruh; two sons, Randolph and Lester, both of Newton; two daughters, Mrs. Roland P. Brown of Detroit, Mich. and Mrs. Leland Wedel of Neodesha; 11 grandchildren, five sisters and four brothers.

SIMON F. SCHMIDT

Simon F. Schmidt, son of Johann and Helen Funk Schmidt, was born Aug. 1, 1894, near Goessel, Kansas. He received his elementary education at the Gordon Grade School and graduated from the Goessel Parochial School in 1913.

He was baptized upon confession of faith May 31, 1914, by Rev. Heinrich Banman and became a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, where he remained a faithful member until his death. He loved his church and was a very progressive member, holding many responsible offices such as Trustee, Reception Committee, Arbitration Committee and various Sunday school positions.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Unruh on Nov. 16, 1918. The parents shared life's joys and sorrows for about 41 years. To this union were born two sons, Randolph [sic Randolf] and Lester, and two daughters, Sophie and Alda [sic Alta].

He was a kind, loving and appreciative husband and father, and grandfather. He enjoyed having his family and friends near him, and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. even in his recent illness he wanted them near him. God granted him the favor of good health which he enjoyed very much until the last few months of his life.

He passed away the morning of June 22, 1959, at his home on the farm. He reached the age of 64 years, 10 months, and 21 days. The family mourns deeply the passing of our dear husband and father. We will always remember his radiant personality, his Christian character, and his hope and faith.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his loving wife, Margaret; two sons, Randolph [sic Randolf] and Lester, both of Newton; two daughters, Mrs. Roland (Sophie) Brown, of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Leland (Alda [sic Alta]) Wedel of Neodesha, Kansas; five sisters, Mrs. P. V. (Helen) Unrau of Chouteau, Okla., Mrs. Adolph (Anna) Schmidt and Mrs. Paul (Katie) Funk, both of Goessel, Mrs. H. Y. (Agnes) Schmidt of Newton, and Mrs. P. I. (Lizzie) Goertz of Lehigh; four brothers, George Schmidt of Goessel, William Schmidt of Moundridge, John F. Schmidt and Herman F. Schmidt, both of Newton, and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Martha. Also surviving him are brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted in the Miller Funeral Home and at the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church on Thursday afternoon, June 25, 1959, in charge of Rev. P. A. Wedel, assisted by Rev. H. B. Schmidt.
