text of obituary:
MOTHER SARAH SCHMIDT, nee VOTH, was born in the village Alexanderwohl, South Russia, January 4, 1862[sic 1863]. At the age of 10 she emigrated with her parents David Voths to the United States of N. A. At Newton, Kansas, they made a temporary home until the farm home in Marion Co. was ready. It took just 100 days to make the change from Russia to this new home in the U. S. A. As there were no public schools in those early days, Rev. Heinrich Banman opened a school in his home, which mother attended. The pioneer life was hard, due to poverty. The help of strong men was much needed and as she was bodily strong, she had to do work in the field, which she gladly did. Since she was of a quiet nature, she carried the many adverse experiences in life bravely. She was baptized in 1881 by Elder Jacob Buller and joined the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, where she was a member in good standing at the time of her death. On March 9, 1882, she was married to Peter A. Schmidt. To this union were born 9 sons and 4 daughters. Thirty-three grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren survive her.
On July 8, 1938, she suffered a stroke from which she never fully recovered. On Dec. 5, 1939, she became seriously ill with pneumonia. This was too much for her weak constitution, and on Dec. 27, at 10 p. m., she went to be at home with the Lord, at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 22 days. She was very happy to go to her Redeemer. Some time ago when she was very anxious to have the assurance that Jesus still remembered her. He suddenly stood before her, but when she stretched her hands toward Him He vanished. Now she had full confidence that she was accepted and in this faith she went home. — She leaves to mourn her departure: Mr. and Mrs. Wilhelm P. Schmidt; Mr. and Mrs. Daniel V. Schmidt: Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schmidt; Mrs. Agnes and Mrs. P. M. Schroeder; Mrs. Margaret and Mr. Arthur Bergman; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schmidt: Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Schmidt: Mr. and Mrs. John Schmidt; 3 brothers, 2 sisters and many friends. Speakers at the funeral were: Rev. C. C. Wedel, on Rom. 6:23, and Rev. P. H. Unruh, on Heb. 11:4.
