— Richard L. Schmidt, young farmer of Route 2, Newton, died Saturday morning at the Bethel Deaconess hospital where he had been a patient for five weeks. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday forenoon at the Tabor Mennonite church, Rev. James Waltner in charge. Mr. Schmidt was born Aug 31, 1925 in Marion County and in 1949 was married to Earla Jean Frey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Frey. In addition to farming he had engaged in custom butchering. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Robert James and Darrell Lee; his mother, Mrs. Frieda Schmidt, one brother, Raymond Schmidt, and one sister, Mrs. Dan Guhr, all of Route 2, Newton.

RICHARD L. SCHMIDT

Richard L. Schmidt, son of Henry L. and Frieda Schmidt, was born on Aug. 31, 1925, in Marion County, Kan. and passed away Aug. 1, at Newton.

He spent his entire life in the Heimbaugh community, where he received his elementary education. Later he graduated from Goessel High School.

He was baptized upon his confession of faith in Jesus Christ his Savior on May 24, 1942 by Elder F. H. Richert and was accepted as a member of the Tabor Mennonite church, where he remained a faithful member throughout his life. During the past year he served as head usher.

He was united in marriage to Earla Jean Frey on Mar. 15, 1949, by Rev. H. B. Schmidt. By God's grace they were privileged to share life's joys and sorrows together for more than ten years. Two boys, Robert and Darrell, were born into this home and they brought much joy to their parents.

He is survived by his loving wife and sons, his mother, Mrs. Frieda Schmidt; one sister, Velma and her husband Dan Guhr; one brother, Raymond and his wife Helen. Also surviving are his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Frey; two brothers-in-law, Raymond and his wife LuEtta and Marlin and his wife Deane; and one sister-in-law, Nila and her husband Morris Woelk.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m., Aug. 4 at the Tabor Mennonite church.
