PETER JOHN SCHMIDT

The Rev. Victor Pankratz, assisted by the Rev. Harold Peters of the McLaurin Baptist Church, officiated at the funeral services on May 11, in the LaGlace (Alta.) Church, for Peter John Schmidt who passed into the presence of the Lord May 7, 1967 at the age of 60 years. He was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Schmidt in Omsk, Russia on September 29, 1906. He emigrated to Canada from Russia in 1926 and spent two years working at Acme, Alberta as a farm hand. In 1928 he came to the Peace River Country where he was engaged in farming until the time of his death.

During his thirty seven years of farming in the LaGlace area he was active in promoting community projects, such as Farmers Union Association, and rural electrification and telephone.

In February of 1931 he acknowledged his need of personal salvation and accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour and Lord. As an expression of this faith he was baptized on July 26, 1921 and received into the membership of the LaGlace Mennonite Brethren Church. In the years that followed he was actively involved in the life and ministry of the church at LaGlace and Calgary. One of his deep concerns was to have others come to know Jesus Christ. This led him to give financially, to involve himself personally, and to encourage his family to become missionary minded.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Unger on November 13, 1930 at LaGlace. God blessed this marriage with eight children, five sons (two of whom died in infancy), and three daughters.

At his sudden passing he leaves to mourn his beloved wife, three sons, David of LaGlace, John of Port Edward, B.C., Henry of Onida, South Dakota; three daughters: Mary (Mrs. Jake Thiessen) of Grande Prairie, Flora (Mrs. Dave Thiessen) of Grande Prairie, Helen (Mrs. Harry Bauer) of Edmonton; 15 grandchildren; two brothers and six sisters.
