PETER J. SCHMIDT, son of Abraham and Anna Schmidt, was born in Franklin Center, Lee County, Iowa, April 20, 1856. He was baptized and joined the Mennonite Church there in 1869. In April 1877 he moved to Kansas and there on October 25, 1885, was married to Christina Vogt, who preceded in death on April 18, 1933. To this union eight children were born; one of whom died in infancy. Surviving are Mrs. Clara Weber, Mrs. Minnie Horsch, Gerhard, Albert, Bertha, Linda and Ella, all living in this vicinity. There are no surviving brothers or sisters.

He was one of the charter members of the Garden Township Church in Kansas, and there served in many capacities, such as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and Choir director. At the time of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the church last September, he was one of the seven, living charter members.

In the spring of 1907 he and his family moved to Upland where they have resided since. In the Upland Church he also served in many ways.

He passed away December 7 having attained the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 17 days. Funeral services were held Friday, December 8 at 2:30 o'clock, at the First Mennonite Church, the pastor, Rev. Lester Hostetler officiating.
