— Funeral services for Peter B. Schmidt, 74, long-time resident of the Walton community, were held Sunday afternoon at the Tabor Mennonite church, Rev. James Waltner officiating. Mr. Schmidt died at the farm home near Walton on Thursday, Jan. 8, after suffering a heart attack. A native of the Hillsboro community, he homesteaded near Cordell, Okla. at the turn of the century, moving to the Walton community in 1913. He is survived by his wife, the former Maria Voth; two daughters; a brother Henry of Cordell; one sister, Mrs. John Schmierer of Bessie, Okla.; and 12 grand-children.

PETER B. SCHMIDT

Peter B. Schmidt, 74, of rural Walton, Kan., passed away at his home Thursday, Jan. 8, following a heart attack.

He was born March 16, 1884, near Hillsboro, Kan., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry D. Schmidt. In 1893 he homesteaded near Cordell, Okla. In 1911 he married Maria Voth and then moved to Kansas in 1913. Since that time they have lived on the farm where he passed away.

Besides his wife, Maria, there survive two daughters, Mrs. Jacob (Meletta) Epp of Haysvlle and Mrs. Andrew (Luella) Sheffler of Wichita. One daughter, Mrs. Clifford Cornelson of Newton, passed away in 1954. Also surviving are one brother, Henry Schmidt of Cordell, Okla., one sister, Mrs. John (Margaret) Schmierer, of Bessie Okla. and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Jan. 11 at 2:30 p. m. in the Tabor Mennonite Church with Rev. James Waltner officiating.

PETER B. SCHMIDT

Peter B. Schmidt, son of Heinrich D. and Margaretha (Barkman) Schmidt, was born March 16, 1884, on a farm near Hillsboro, Kansas, and passed away Jan. 8, 1959, at his home near Walton, Kansas. He attained the aged of 74 years, nine months, and 22 days.

He attended the grades at the Antioch school near Hillsboro.

At the age of 14 years, he with his parents moved by covered wagon to Oklahoma. They homesteaded near Cordell. There he spent his boyhood days, encountering much of the anxiety and hardship of pioneer life.

As a young man he returned to Kansas where he worked on various farms in the Tabor and Alexanderwohl community.

On June 4, 1911, he was baptized by Rev. P. H. Richert upon his confession of faith, and was received into the membership of the Tabor Mennonite Church were he remained a faithful member until his death.

On Dec. 2, 1911, he was united in marriage to Maria Voth. Their first year was spent at Cordell, Okla., after which they returned to Kansas. In March 1913 they located on a farm north of Walton where they remained for the rest of their 47 years of wedded life. Their home was blessed with three children.

He was of a quiet, cheerful disposition and enjoyed the casual calls and hand clasps of friends and relatives. He treasured many Scripture passages which had been committed to memory.

Only recently did he experience ill health. A first heart attack on April 18, 1958, and another in December foreshadowed the fatal attack. Just three days before his death the doctor examined him and was not alarmed about his condition.

A daughter Ruby (Mrs. Clifford Cornelsen) preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were a brother, David, and a step sister, Mary Kliewer.

He leaves to mourn his sudden passing and to remember his life: his bereaved wife two daughters, Meletta (Mrs. Jacob F. Epp) of Haysville, Kansas, Luella (Mrs. Andrew Scheffler) of Wichita, Kansas; 12 grandchildren; one brother, Henry, of Cordell, Okla.; one sister, Margaret Schmierer of Bessie, Okla.; one step-brother, Henry Ratzlaff of Cordell, an many relatives and friends.
