Menno E. Schmidt, 69, a member of the Newton city commission and former mayor of the city, died unexpectedly Saturday evening at Bethel Deaconess Hospital after suffering a heart attack. The funeral was conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Bethel College Church, with Rev. Esko Loewen in charge. A native of the Canton community, Mr. Schmidt attended Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. For many years he was employed by Regier Loan and Abstract Co. here, retiring in 1962. He was appointed to the city commission in 1964 to fill an unexpired term, and was then elected for a four-year term in 1965. He served as mayor in 1965-66. He was active in the local Rotary Club, the Harvey County Historical Society, Newton Garden Club, and served on the city planning commission for 16 years. Survivors include his widow, Esther, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Niles of Newton and Mrs. Bob Reber of Halstead; one sister, two brothers, a foster sister, and six grandchildren.
