— Funeral services were held at the Tabor Mennonite church Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Marie Schmidt, 75, of Goessel, who died Thursday, Sept. 8, two days after suffering a stroke of paralysis. She was born near Lehigh Aug. 18, 1880, and was a charter member of the Tabor congregation. The services were in charge of Rev. H. B. Schmidt, assisted by Rev. P. A. Wedel. She is survived by her husband, C. J. Schmidt, six daughters, two sons, 24 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

MRS. C. J. SCHMIDT

Marie Friesen Schmidt was born Aug. 18, 1880, near Lehigh, Kan. to Gerhard and Marie Friesen. She passed to her heavenly home on Thursday, Sept. 8, 1955, at the age of 75 years and 21 days.

On June 3, 1903,she was baptized upon the confession of her faith in Christ as her Saviour from sin by Rev. Peter Balzer and received as a member into the Alexanderwohl church.

When the Tabor church was organized she and her hsubnad became charter members Jan. 21, 1909. She a faithufl [sic] member of the Tabor church until her death. It was her joy to witness the baptism of all her children in the Tabor church. She attended services as long as she could. After it was no longer possible for her to go to church she found much joy in listening to the church services over the radio on Sunday mornings. she would often take her hymnary and sing along as the hymns were being sung. Often when father would come in she would be singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus, which was one of her favorite songs. She spent much time reading her Bible.

On Nov. 9, 1904, she was united in marriage to Cornelius J. Schmidt by Rev. C. C. Wedel. To this union six daughters and three sons were born, of which one son, Edwin, preceded her in death due to a car accident on Nov. 16, 1932. Her only brother john and thee grandchildren also preceded her in death.

It was the joy of the family to have the parents celebrate both the silver and the golden wedding anniversaries.

She was a good mother to all of her children and a good life companion. It was always a great joy to her when her children and grandchildren came home. When the whole family was together she was the happiest.

In 1925 she became troubled with arthritis which caused her much pain. She became quite crippled, but patiently bore her cross with little complaint.

On Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1955, she suffered a stroke which left her helpless until her death of Thursday. Even during those last days she did not complain of suffering, but was more concerned about inconveniencing those who cared for her.

Until Jan. 12, 1955, the parents lived on the farm. The children Helen and Arthur Janzen lived in the same house almost until that time and together with them they did the farm work. After Helen and Arthur moved to Newton the children all took turns in helping the parents. On Jan. 12, 1955, the parents moved to Goessel. Mother had been happy on the farm and she was happy in Goessel. She appreciated her neighbors at both places. Now she has gone to her heavenly reward.

She leaves to mourn her death her husband Cornelius J. Schmidt; her children, Olga, Mrs. Henry Pankratz and family, Alice, Mrs. John Dirksen and family, Ferd and family, Mary, Mrs. John Golden and husband, Esther, Mrs. Herbert Klassen and family, Martha, Mrs. Abe Peters and family, Jake and family, Helen, Mrs. Arthur Janzen and family (total of 24 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren); also one brother-in-law; four sisters-in-law and a great host of other relatives and friends.
