text of obituary:
MARIE SCHMIDT
Marie Schmidt, daughter of Andreas and Petranella Schmidt, was born Aug. 19, 1872, in the village of Michalien, Polish Russia. at the age of six, she was a part of the last group of families who left this heavily forested area and came to the open prairies of Kansas. She was the last of those who belonged to the congregation in Michalien and reestablished it here at Gnadenberg near Newton, Kan.
She was baptized by Elder Johann Schroeder in 1889 and remained a devoted member of this congregation her life testifying that she had accepted the message and work of the church.
She was married to our father, Heinrich P. Schmidt, on Nov. 24, 1892, by Elder G. N. Harms. Eleven children were born to them. One son, Arnold, died in infancy and a daughter, Alda (Mrs. Clarence Harms), died in 1958.
After their marriage, our parents established their home one-half mile west of the church. They lived on the farm for 44 years, moving in 1937 to Newton where they enjoyed several years of more leisurely living.
During the 64 years father and mother walked life's pathway together, there were many occasions of good fellowship with their family and friends and for praising God. Mother loved to extend hospitality at such times.
After father's death in 1957, mother entered the Bethel Home for the Aged where she was an appreciative resident for over nine years. When she became less active physically, she still spent much time praying for us. Gently her spirit departed on Sept. 30, 1966. She attained the age of 94 years, one month and ten days.
She leaves to cherish her memory six daughters, Mrs. John (Adelia) Goertz of Hillsboro, Mrs. P. C. (Olga) Jantz of Newton, Miss Johanna Schmidt of Wichita, Mrs. Roy F. (Matilda) Hiebert of Newton, Mrs. Sam (Lea) Good of Wichita, Mrs. Walter (Verna) Unrau of Newton; three sons, Herbert A. of Route 3, Newton, Waldo O. of Goessel, and Reinhold F. of Whitewater, two sisters, Mrs. D. W. Schmidt of Wichita and Mrs. Gus Ewert of Whitewater; 24 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren.
