Birth date: 1878 Jun 25
text of obituary:
MRS. MARIA SCHMIDT
Maria Schmidt, nee Goossen, daughter of Franz H. and Maria Unruh Goossen, was born June 25, 1878, in McPherson county Kansas. During her childhood days her parents moved to Marion county, where she grew up in her parental home under Christian influence. The opportunities for getting an education were limited, because of her mother's health.
In her youth she received catechetical instruction and was baptized upon confession of faith in her redeemer Jesus Christ on May 24, 1896, by elder Jacob Buller, and was received into the Alexanderwohl church, where she remained a faithful member until death.
Jan. 15, 1901, she entered into holy wedlock with Henry W. Boese. This marriage lasted only a short time, for death took her husband already on June 28, 1902. The duration of this marriage was only one and one-half years. To this union was born one daughter.
On June 10, 1903, she was joined in holy wedlock with Henry D. G. Schmidt. They enjoyed life’s joys and sorrows together for 45 years, 7 months and 18 days. To this union were born 6 children, four daughters and two sons, of which one daughter, Martha, Mrs. George Janzen, preceded her in death about 2 ½ years ago, which caused the departed much sorrow.
Our mother was a loving mother and much concerned about the spiritual welfare of her family, and was always willing to help as much as health and strength permitted. She was not always in the best of health. In Sept 1947 she took sick with heart-dropsy, which suffering she bore bravely. The last two months she suffered severely. She fell asleep in Jesus Jan. 28, 1949, at 8:20 a. m., reaching the age of 70 years 7 months and 3 days.
She leaves to mourn her departure her sorrowing husband, Henry D. G. Schmidt, and the following children: Marie, Mrs. Chris Klassen and husband, Newton; Henry M. Schmidt and wife Bertha, of Hillsboro; Elizabeth, Mrs. John Klassen, and husband, Newton; Frieda, Mrs. George A. Schroeder, and husband, Newton; Margaret, Mrs. Ernest Duerksen, and husband, Hillsboro; Jacob P. Schmidt and wife Sylvia, Hillsboro; one son-in-law, George Janzen and wife Agnes, Hillsboro; also 25 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. (Four grandchildren preceded her in death).
The following sisters also mourn her passing: Mrs. Eva Flaming, Mrs. P. J. Flaming, Mrs. Andrew Buller, Mrs. David C. Koehn, and Miss Sara Goossen. Frank M. Goossen, her only brother, and sisters Katherina, Mrs. Henry Ediger, and Mrs. Jacob Hiebert preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held in the home on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 1, and also at the Alexanderwohl church under the direction of Rev. P. A. Wedel, the pastor of the church. Interment was made in the Alexanderwohl church cemetery.
