MARIA DYCK SCHMIDT

Maria Dyck [Dueck] Schmidt, daughter of Johann C. and Katherina Ratzlaff Dyck [Dueck], was born Nov. 18, 1884, on a farm near Buhler, Kansas. She departed this life on August 1, 1958, at 7:30 a. m. at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton, reaching the age of 73 years, eight months and 13 days.

She spent her childhood days with her parents on the farm six miles east of Buhler where she was born, and received her elementary education at the Alta School. At the age of 17 she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized upon here confession of faith into the Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church on May 20, 1902, by Elder Peter Balzer. She remained a faithful member of this church until her departure. She had joy in her church affiliation and when health permitted she was active in the sewing circle and other church activities. She found much consolation in Psalm 103.

On June 13, 1906, she was married to Jacob F. Schmidt with whom she shared life's joys and sorrows for more than 52 years. They had the joy of celebrating the 25th wedding anniversary in 1931 and on June 13, 1956, also the 50th anniversary. To this union six children were born, to whom she was a kind and loving mother. She was deeply concerned about the salvation of her children and grandchildren.

She enjoyed good health until 1946 when she submitted to surgery. Since then her health had gradually failed and various complications set in. However, by surgical help and hospital care she always recovered enough so she could come home to perform her household duties and enjoy the family circle. On August 1 she was stricken with a second heart attack and was taken to the Bethel Deaconess Hospital where within a hour she calmly and quietly breathed her last breath, to be taken into the arms of her Savior.

Mother leaves to mourn her departure her bereaved husband, Jacob F. Schmidt, four sons and their wives, John and Rubina, Eldo and Esther, Otto and Linda, all of Buhler, Olin and Tillie of Inman, and two daughters and their husbands, Lydia and Albert Ediger of Moundridge, and Rubena [sic Rubina] and Dave Friesen of Buhler; 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One daughter-in-law and one grandson preceded her in death. Also surviving are three brothers, Peter J. Dyck [Dueck], Rev. A. J. Dyck [Dueck], and John J. Dyck [Dueck] and their wives, all of Buhler; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Nachtigal and her husband of Halstead, and Mrs. Sara Nikkel of Buhler; her step-brother and sisters, C. J. Schmidt and wife, Mrs. H. F. Schmidt, Mrs. A. J. Voth and husband, Mrs. H. H. Ediger and husband, all of Buhler, and Mrs. H. H. Flaming of Las Cruces, New Mexico; 45 nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.

We mourn her departure and shall miss her tender love and care. — The Family.
