Schmidt, Jonathan (1899-1965)
Mennonite Weekly Review obituary: 1965 Jan 7 p. 11
Birth date: 1899 Jan 5
text of obituary:
Jonathan Schmidt, son of Jacob A. R. and Kathryn (Johnson) Schmidt, was born Jan. 5, 1899 at Halstead, Kan. and passed away Nov. 17, 1964 at 4:30 p.m. at the age of 65 years, ten months and 12 days. Death was caused by a heart attack.
Jonathan grew to manhood in the Halstead community. At the age of 16 years he accepted Christ as his personel [sic] Saviour and upon the confession of his faith was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite, being a faithful member to the end.
He was engaged in farming and soon became interested at Rich Hill, Mo. with a small group of others, visualizing the opportunity of establishing homes and the mission of saving souls in which he was deeply interested.
On Aug. 23rd, 1925, he was united in marriage with Annie Koehn of Canton, Kan., with whom he shared the joys and sorrows of life over 39 years. This union was blessed with five children.
He often expressed his concern for the spiritual welfare of his family and friends. He felt a conviction and desire to lay aside his farming and spend a while at the mission at Greasewood, Ariz. among the Navaho Indians. We served there a work he very much enjoyed till his health failed.
Having retired from active farming for several years, we built a home in Rich Hill enjoying it for about four months. Here amid his cherished surroundings his soul took its flight to the dawn of a new day. He has left us a blessed assurance of entering eternal rest where we all hope to meet him someday.
He leaves to mourn his departure, Annie, his deeply bereaved wife; one son and three daughters. Allen and wife Margaret, Evelyn and husband Gerald Dirks, Marylou and husband Leland Dirks, all of Butler, Mo.; Violet and husband Arthur Wedel of Durham, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Maria Koehn; seven brothers and ten sisters and many relatives and friends. One son Earvey preceded him in death.
