— Services for John J. Schmidt, 71, of Goessel took place at the Alexanderwohl church Wednesday forenoon. Mr. Schmidt passed away Saturday afternoon. He is survived by his wife and ten children: Dr. Herbert R. Schmidt, Mrs. Arthur Banman and Mrs. John W. Unruh of Newton; Mrs. Waldo Janzen of Goessel and Raymond and Gerald af [sic] the home; Dr. John R. Schmidt of Freeman, S. D.; Mrs. Edwin Stretch, St. Louis, Mo.; Dr. Alfred Schmidt, Corpus Christi, Texas; and Herman J. Schmidt, Wichita.

JOHN J. SCHMIDT

John J. Schmidt, son of Jacob E. and Helena Schroeder Schmidt, was born in McPherson county, Kansas, on November 23, 1875. He received his elementary education in the public schools of McPherson county. Later he attended the Bible school of Peter Balzer and the Bethel Academy.

He was baptized upon the confession of his faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour on May 5, 1896, and received as a member in the Alexanderwohl church, of which he remained a faithful member until his death.

Being the son of a pioneering family, his early experiences were very beneficial and made a deep impression upon him and many others as it revealed to them the correct evaluation of material and spiritual things. Characters were formed that were not to be moved by the changes and storms of life. He had a joy in testifying for the Lord. He firmly believed in the time which the Bible speaks of as the "latter days," and he wished to witness the personal return of Christ.

On April 27, 1902 he was united in holy matrimony with Elizabeth Rempel, by Rev. Heinrich Banman. This union was blessed with 11 children, seven sons and four daughters. Of these one son, Orlando, preceded him in death. He was grandfather to 15 children. Sharing joys and sorrows for may year, Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt were permitted by the grace of God to observe their 45th anniversary with family and friends last spring.

On Aug. 23, 1947, after doing his forenoon work,he felt the need of a little rest but soon realized that it was more serious. Medical aid was secured and he was taken to the Bethesda hospital where, after a few minutes, he was called home to his Saviour. He attained the age of 71 years and nine months.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife; four daughters, Frieda, Mrs. Arthur Banman, Newton, Wilma, Mrs. John W. Unruh, Newton, Elizabeth, Mrs. Edwin Stretch, St. Louis, Mo., Irene, Mrs. Waldo Janzen, Goessel; and six sons, Dr. Herbert R. Schmidt and family, Newton, Dr. John R. Schmidt and family, Freeman, South Dakota, Dr. Alfred F. Schmidt and wife, Corpus Christi, Texas, Herman J. Schmidt and wife, Wichita, Raymond and Gerald of the home. He also leaves two sisters, Miss Margaret Schmidt, Parson [sic Parsons], Kansas, and Mrs. Peter J. Rempel of Goessel, and other relatives and friends. — Mrs. John J.Schmidt and Family.
