text of obituary:

JACOB J. SCHMIDT was born December 25, 1873, in the village of Alexanderwohl, South Russia. His parents were Jacob E. Schmidt and Helena, nee Schroeder. When he was 6 months old, his parents joined the great Mennonite exodus to America and settled in McPherson Co., Kansas. Here he spent his life. He was baptized upon the confession of his faith by Elder Jacob Buller, May 14, 1894, and joined the Alexanderwohl Church. To him it was a pleasure to take part in the activities of the church.

On October 16, 1898, he was united in marriage with Lizzie Enns. He lived in the state of matrimony 39 years. Four children were born to the couple, three sons and one daughter. Later on in 1919 a foster daughter was taken into their home. Not having been well for sometime, he entered the Bethesda Hospital at Goessel, Kansas, Nov. 4, 1937, and the next day he submitted to an operation which was successful, but it was found that his trouble was more serious than expected, it was abdominal cancer. On last New Year’s day he was moved from his home to that of his children, Menno Schmidts, in Newton, to be near the doctor who gave him treatments. Many prayers were offered for his recovery. The will of God was different. When the pains increased and his desire to go home to be with the Lord was deeply felt, we prayed that the Lord should fulfill his longing. The Lord took him home in the early morning of February 4, 1938, at the age of 64 years, 1 month and 9 days.

During the trying days of sickness he was quiet and resigned to bear whatever the Lord let come upon him. He gave a clear testimony of his hope to eventually receive the crown of life. We keenly feel his departure but we are comforted to know that he has entered the promised rest. — He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Mrs. Lizzie Schmidt, four children: Mr. and Mrs. Menno Schmidt, Jacob Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Voth, and the adopted daughter, Mrs. and Mr. Arthur Buller, and 8 grandchildren; also one brother and three sisters, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral service: German sermon by Rev. C. C. Wedel, Job 14:14; English sermon by Rev. P. H. Unruh, Eccl. 9:10 and 2 Cor. 5:8. Service at the grave by Rev. J. J. Bannman.
