— Mrs. David A. Schmidt, 97, a native of Russia who came to the United States in 1877, died Oct. 16 at the Cedar Rest Nursing home near Marion where she had been a patient for some time. Funeral services were held at the Tabor Mennonite church on Monday afternoon, with Rev. James Waltner and Rev. H. B. Schmidt officiating. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Isaac Schmidt and Mrs. H. H. Androes of Newton, and Mrs. Marie Zacharias of Hillsboro; two sons, A. B. Schmidt of Tucson, Ariz. and Arnold T. Schmidt of Newton; one brother, John Becker [Bekker] of Newton; 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

MRS. HERMINE SCHMIDT

Mrs. Hermine Becker [Bekker] Schmidt was born July 16, 1862, the daughter of Heinrich Becker [Bekker] and Maria Lange. Her parents lived in the village of Gnadenfeld, South Russia, where mother also received her elementary education.

In 1877 she came with her parents to this country. They settled on a farm about ten miles north of Newton in Marion county, Kansas.

On August 15, 1880, she was baptized by Elder Jacob Buller and was received into the membership of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church.

On Feb. 7, 1884, she was married to David A. Schmidt, with whom she shared joys and hardships for 61 years and 10 months. Father died Dec. 8, 1945; she thus spent 14 years as a widow.

In 1908 our parents transferred their church membership to the newly organized Tabor Mennonite church, of which she was a faithful member till death. She always took a keen interest in church work, being an active member in the Sewing Society for many years.

Our parents' married life was blessed with seven children, of whom two passed away in infancy. The living are Andrew B. Schmidt of Tucson, Ariz.; Mrs. Isaac Schmidt (Gertrude) of Newton, Kansas; Mrs. Marie Zacharias of Hillsboro, Kansas; Mrs. Herman H. Androes (Hermine)of Newton, Kansas; and Arnold T.Schmidt, rural Newton, Kansas.

In addition to these, 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and one brother, John Becker [Bekker] of Newton, Kansas, mourn her departure and remember her long life of faith.

Her last years were spent largely as an invalid requiring institutional care. Death came Oct. 16, 1959, when she reached the age of 97 years and three months. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 19, 1959 at the Tabor Mennonite church. Burial was made in the Tabor church cemetery.
