HERMAN SCHMIDT

Herman Schmidt, son of Fred P. (Becker) Schmidt was born near Canton, McPherson county, Kansas on July 5, 1902. He died at the Trinity Hospital, Dodge City, Kan. on Aug. 25, at the age of 66 years, one month and 20 days.

At the age of 13, in 1915, he came with his parents in a covered wagon to Gray County. They settled east of Montezuma and started to break soil for farming. He went to school until his father needed him at home. He took great interest in farming and ranching.

On Nov. 2, 1924, he was married to Rebecca Nightengale in the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, at Fairview, Okla. by Rev. H. D. Smith. To this union was born one daughter, Viola. Herman was baptized and became a member of the church on Jan. 18, 1920.

As husband and father, he was a loving companion. He spent much time with his family, taking many trips with them.

His health had been failing the past year.

Those who will miss him the most are his widow, Rebecca; his daughter Viola Mrs. Henry E. Unruh and their family of three boys; three brothers, Reuben of Copeland, Walter and Ervin, both of Montezuma; three sisters, Mrs. Albert Smith (Lindy), DeRidder, La., Mrs. Melvin Unruh (Goldie), Copeland, and Mrs. Walter Yost (Sylvia), Scott City, and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Funeral services were held at the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, at Montezuma, on Wednesday morning, Aug. 28. Rev. Ervey Unruh, Dodge City, Rev. Daniel Koehn of Montezuma and Rev. C. D. Boese of Copeland officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
