— H. D. G. Schmidt, 75, retired farmer of the Goessel community, died Sunday morning at the home of his son, Jacob P. Schmidt, near Hillsboro. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Alexanderwohl church, Rev. Edwin Stucky in charge. Mr. Schmidt is survived by two sons and four daughters, H. M. Schmidt, Jacob P. Schmidt and Mrs. Ernest Duerksen of Hillsboro, Mrs. John Klassen and Mrs. George A. Schroeder of Newton; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Chris Klassen of Newton; two sisters, Mrs. P. C. Neufeld and Mrs. Will Schroeder of Hillsboro; 24 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

HENRY D. G. SCHMIDT

Henry D. G. Schmidt, son of David and Elizabeth Goertz Schmidt, was born Sept. 27, 1877, in Marion county, Kansas.

On May 23, 1897, he was baptized upon confession of his faith in Jesus Christ his Redeemer by Rev. Peter Balzer, and received as a member into the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church of Goessel, Kansas. He remained a true and faithful member until his death.

He was united in marriage to Mrs. Maria Goossen Boese on June 10, 1903. With this marriage he assumed fatherhood of one daughter. They settled down on a farm nine miles southwest of Hillsboro where they shared life’s joys and sorrows and received God’s blessings till mother was taken from his side to her heavenly reward four and one-half years ago.

To this union were born two sons and four daughters. One daughter, Martha, Mrs. George Janzen, preceded her father in death. After mother's death father made his home in Goessel. In early spring of 1953 his health began to fail. On May 5 he submitted to major surgery in the Bethesda hospital at Goessel, Kansas. His illness was diagnosed as cancer. Father never regained his health and on August 5 he began to fail rapidly. He spent his latter days on his farm home with his son, Jacob P. Schmidt and family.

He left his earthly life on August 9 at 6:30 a.m. to be taken to his heavenly reward. Father reached the age of 75 years, 10 months and 12 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure the following children. Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. John Klassen, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Schroeder, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Duerksen, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob P. Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Chris. Klassen, and Mr. and Mrs. George Janzen.

He also leaves 28 grandchildren (four preceded him in death), two great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. P. C. Neufeld and Mrs. Will Schroeder and many relatives and friends.

Due to the absence of Rev. P. A. Wedel, the funeral services were led by Rev. Peter Goering of Lehigh. He used as Scripture text II Corinthians 4:6-18. He was assisted by Rev. Edwin R. Stucky who used as his text James 4:14, “Wenn ich am Ufer des Jordans steh” and “Face to Face” were sung by Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Duerksen and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schmidt.
